Israel has bombed Beirut’s southern suburbs in its first direct strike on the Lebanese capital since the April ceasefire, escalating fears of a wider regional war as Israeli attacks across Lebanon continue.
The air strike targeted the Ghobeiry area in southern Beirut, causing major destruction in densely populated neighbourhoods.
Israel claimed the attack was aimed at Hezbollah commander Malek Balou, though Hezbollah has not officially confirmed the claim.
Lebanese officials had earlier reported on Wednesday that attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon had killed 16 people.
At least 21 others, including paramedics, have been wounded in these attacks. Among the areas hit were a school, several residential areas, and civilian infrastructure.
