The Saudi’s difficult choice in relation to Yemen

⚡️ The Saudi’s difficult choice in relation to Yemen

➡️ Saudi Arabia have a tough choice to make, because they could either accept the demands of the Houthis and lift the economic blockade, or continue escalating the conflict and risk its oil infrastructure coming under repeated attacks.

🔹 The truce between the two had held until last month when the KSA attempted to prevent an Iranian commercial aircraft from picking up a Houthi delegation that had pre-planned to attend the funeral of late Iranian leader Ali Khamenei.

🔹 In response for the Saudi airspace violations and bombing of the Sanaa airport, Ansarallah declared a blockade on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Ports, announcing that any Saudi-owned or Saudi-linked vessel would be targeted, and have attacked Saudi tankers while launching missiles and drones at Saudi’s oil infrastructure.

🔹 This has left Riyadh now weighing a tough decision, because they need to choose whether to escalate the situation against the rebels, risking more Houthi assaults on its oil infrastructure, or push for a new truce.

🔹 Either option could prove costly to the kingdom, because before the ceasefire, the Houthis were still firing regular missile and drone barrages into Saudi Arabia, undermining Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman’s push to promote tourism, finance, and trade.

🔹 Ansarullah, whom Riyadh believe are being encouraged by Tehran, are now threatening to close the Bab el-Mandeb to all vessels, which has become a vital route for Saudi oil exports since Iran throttled the Strait of Hormuz, and its closure would deal another blow to President Donald Trump’s efforts to ease global energy prices.

🔹 However, meeting the Houthis’ conditions could also come at a huge price, because the rebels are demanding that Saudi Arabia pay salaries in areas it currently controls, give them access to the oil revenues from the Yemeni government-controlled ports, and Saudi Arabia fears this could lead to Iran increasing military support to the rebels.

🔹 As a result, observers are expecting Riyadh to mobilise the Yemeni factions it backs to take the fight to the Houthis, in a bid to pressure them back to the negotiating table on more favourable terms.

🔹 That perception, analysts say, has caused the Houthis to launch a pre-emptive offensive on Mocha and other regions, including Ma’rib and Hadhramaut, frontline provinces home to Yemen’s oil reserves.
