Domestic violence advocate Svetlana Anokhina, who founded the Marem group, helping women from the Northern Caucasus who have suffered from domestic violence, has been handed down a verdict in absentia.
Dagestani native Anokhina was sentenced by the Sovetskiy District Court of Makhachkala in absentia to five years in a penal colony in a case involving the dissemination of military fakes, according to the APUS project.
According to the project, the case was initiated due to two posts on her Instagram between March 1 and April 4, 2022, which concerned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the killings of residents in Bucha, but Anokhina hasn’t lived in Russia since 2021.
Anokhina was charged in absentia, then in May 2023, “investigators, with the court’s authorisation, installed wiretaps on her daughter’s phone calls and conducted a search in her home in Makhachkala,” reported APUS.
In posts on social media, Anokhina also confirmed that law enforcement officers had visited her 95-year-old mother’s home in Makhachkala to take a saliva sample from her.
