China has sentenced former defence ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu to death with a two-year reprieve following their convictions on bribery and corruption charges.
The ruling followed their expulsion from the Communist Party in June 2024 for ‘serious violations of discipline,’ which allegedly included the acceptance of large bribes and the abuse of positions for personal gain.
According to existing Chinese law, a suspended death sentence can be commuted to life imprisonment if the convicted individual doesn’t commit a new crime during the reprieve period, and may be further reduced in the event of good behaviour.
