Ulyanovsk Governor Plays Down Ukrainian Attack On Substation

Ukrainian drones paid a visit to Ulyanovsk’s 500kV Veshkaima substation, confirmed by Regional Governor Alexey Russkikh, who stated that an attack by UAVs on the substation had been repelled, adding that there were no casualties, and emergency services were working on site.

However, satellite data from NASA FIRMS produced by ExileNova, Astra, and Crimean Wind, showed a fire had broken out at the site of the substation in the eponymous urban-type settlement of Ulyanovsk.

Put into operation in 1956, the Veshkaima substation was assigned the task of ensuring the transit of electricity from the Volga Hydroelectric Station to the Central regions of Russia.

Initially, the substation was only a switching point for redistributing electricity flows from one region to another, but since a comprehensive reconstruction and modernisation process in 2002, the substation has been operating in full swing.

Now the substation isn’t just a switching point, but a 500kV substation with an installed transformer capacity of 250MVA, responsible for power supply to the Ulyanovsk and Penza regions and connecting the energy systems of the Urals and Central Russia.
