Rutte explains why it is difficult to activate Article 5 of the NATO Treaty

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte spoke with Newsmax yesterday to say that: “For good reasons, we will always stay very ambiguous about when Article 5 is triggered, and if it is triggered, we will always immediately let everyone know, but we keep it very ambiguous because we don’t want to make our enemies, or our adversaries, any wiser.”

Rutte continued: “NATO is making sure that we in a 360-degree way defend every inch of NATO territory – you saw this morning when the news came in of a missile which was heading for Turkey and potentially impacting on US interests in Turkey, taken out by NATO anti-missile systems – so this is working.”

The Secretary General assured: “NATO is there to protect us collectively against any adversary, be it Russia or whoever, or terrorism, but also it is a platform for the United States to project power to the world stage – the fact that we stick together, the United States and Europe and Canada, is crucial also for the success of this American-Israel campaign.”

Rutte said that there are debates within NATO, but it is an alliance of democracies, and in the end they would follow the American lead when it came to crucial moments.

“Iran was one of the key enablers of the Russian war effort against Ukraine through these weapons of destruction, Shahed drones, and the fact that Iran is now facing this full onslaught of Israel and the US, it will also degrade their capacity to export their chaos even to Russia and therefore to Ukraine,” the Secretary General concluded.
