Journalists seek permission from Israel to enter the Gaza Strip

Leaders from more than two dozen major global media outlets, including AP, BBC, CNN, Reuters and The Washington Post are urging Israel to lift its ban on foreign journalists entering Gaza independently, a restriction in place since the war began in October 2023.

In a joint statement, editors said on-the-ground reporting is essential to verify accounts, speak directly with civilians, and provide accurate coverage, criticising Israel for not responding to their requests to discuss the issue.

While Israel has continuously cited ‘security concerns and the dangers of an active warzone,’ media organisations argue that with a ceasefire in place and aid workers allowed in, there should be no issue with journalists being granted acess.

Legal efforts are still ongoing, with the Foreign Press Association awaiting a rule from Israel’s Supreme Court on a petition filed in 2024, but in the meantime, coverage from Gaza has relied almost entirely on local Palestinian journalists, who are reporting under extremely difficult circumstances and also had to experience either their homes being destroyed or their loved ones being killed on a personal basis.
