KYIV MORNING REPORT – Oct 22

Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital in a combined strike that lasted for more than eight hours, including ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as attack drones, and Mig-31K’s firing Kinzhal missiles into the country.

Main targets appeared to be energy infrastructure in the capital with an aim of cutting off the electricity and gas supplies, so it was no surprise to see ballistic Iskander missiles heading towards Kyiv at around midnight, followed by drones soon after, targeting the TEC-4, TEC-5, and TEC-6 power plants in particular.

As a result of the attacks, there were multiple fatalities and injuries reported by the Mayor and other district authorities for the capital, while the damage reports were still being assessed as the rest of Ukraine returned to some kind of normality following the landing of the MIG-31K planes.

Honcharenko issued a statement soon after the earlier attacks, stating that the entire gas infrastructure had been knocked out for the region, adding that there was absolutely no preparation for such an extensive attack on the capital.

Five people died and 18 people were injured as Russia bombarded Kyiv with missiles and attack drones overnight, mainly targeting the energy infrastructure, but also causing damage to private houses and multi-story apartment buildings.

Russia struck the Brovary district with a drone that killed a young woman born in 1987, along with a six-month-old baby and 12-year-old girl in the village of Pohreby, and their bodies were found at the site of a private house fire, as condolences were issued from Kyiv’s authorities.

Rescuers managed to save an 83-year-old woman from a burning house in Brovary, who was alive but in shock, while the debris also caused a fire in a private house and a truck with a trailer, all of which were promptly extinguished by the State Emergency Services.

An hit on a 16-story building in the Dnipro District caused a fire to break out on the 6th floor, and while ten people were rescued, including children, there were two fatalities reported initially, later clarified to be the body of just one deceased that was found in an apartment.

Another fire was reported to have broken in a multi-apartment building on the 8th and 9th floors which was attended to by rescuers, who reported that there was one fatality as a result of the attack.

Fragments also fell into the yard of a nearby residential building, but there were no casualties reported as a result, nor were there any fires, but the blast wave did shatter the windows of a nearby residential building.

As a result of last night’s attack, the premises of one of the medical facilities in the Dnipro district of Kyiv was damage, reported Vitali Klitschko, adding that some windows of the medical facility were blown out, but there wasn’t any information about casualties, while correspondents of Focus reported that new explosions had been heard in Kyiv.

Around 06:30 this morning the Russians dropped explosives from a drone onto a car in the Dniprovskiy district, causing shrapnel wounds and mine-explosive trauma to a 62-year-old man from Kherson, who admitted himself to an hospital for treatment and further examinations were under way.

Soon after the attacks had ended, an emergency power outage notice had been issued for the entire district, however some reports suggested that power was still flowing to apartments, and those who had power should use it “sparingly”.

As a result of a hit in the Darnytskyi District that targeted the power plant, a UAV hit an apartment building causing damage from floors 11 to 16 in a 17-floor complex, resulting in 15 people being rescued, including two children, while a two-story non-residential building nearby had also been on fire, but it was classed as “localised” by firefighters this morning.

Drones also attacked the Desnianskyi district, causing damage to the facade of a 10-story building, and causing a fire to break out on a nearby car and gas pipeline, while rescuers evacuated 20 people from the building.

An hit on the 21st floor of a 25-story building caused a small fire in the district of Pecherskyi, but the fire had been extinguished before the rescuers had arrived, while a second hit on the 2nd and 3rd floor of a three-story residential building resulted in one person being injured and admitted to hospital.

Drone debris fell in the Solomianskyi district of the capital, causing damage to garages, and firefighters attended the scene to deal with any consequences.

Some bus routes and train routes are temporarily changing directions because of the attacks last night, and it’s advised to check any planned travel with the bus companies or Ukrzaliznytsia.

UPDATE: Klitschko confirms there were 18 injured residents as a result of last night’s attack, while Tkachenko reported that two people had died in the city, not mentioning those three who had died as a result of the attack on Pohreby, Brovary.
