Four dead, debris of five others, and 2 injured in a train attack on civilians by Russia

Russia attacked a passenger train that was operating on the Barvinkove-Lviv-Chop on the Kramatorsk Direction with three drones in the early evening of January 27.

As a result of the attack there were four people who had perished in the fire, according to President Zelensky, while the debris of other bodies had also been found, as rescuers noted that it would take DNA processes to identify them.

An injured man and woman were admitted to the local hospital, where the Director of the Emergency Medical Center Victor Zabasta confirmed the patients were in a moderately-severe condition.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister for the Restoration of Ukraine Oleksiy Kuleba, there were 291 people on the train at the time of the attack.

During the autumn, the trains didn’t run between Kramatorsk and Sloviansk for the situation, so the final station for all routes was the city of Barvinkove in the Kharkiv region, where passengers would then transfer to buses to continue their journey.

Information provided by the Head of the Regional State Administration Oleg Sinegubov stated that a wagon and a locomotive caught fire, as emergency services worked the scene, and buses  had been deployed to transport the passengers.

“Drones are constantly flying in the city, there are explosions again,” reported the Head of the local State Emergency Service Alexander Balo, continuing: “The situation is at its most critical stage now, so there’s no full understanding of the victims yet, we’re currently engaged in the evacuation.”

According to Balo, all available passenger vehicles and municipal buses were sent to collect the passengers from the train.

Later, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office updated the media to say that the fragments of five bodies were found at the site of the burning train, and the identification of the deceased would be possible following DNA examinations.

Rescuers reported that the fire had been extinguished by 11pm, while Ukrzaliznytsia noted that the 10 surviving carriages had resumed movement to transport 147 passengers on the return journey, as well as picking up a group of civilian evacuees from Lozova.

Meanwhile, Izium’s Regional State Administration noted that power lines and railway tracks were damaged in their district as a result of drone attacks, but no people were injured, and KAB strikes damaged buildings in Studenka of the Oskilska community, according to the RSA.

Russia attacked a car with an FPV drone yesterday morning in the Kupiansk district, causing the couple in the vehicle to sustain burn injuries, according to the Prosecutor’s Office, noting that the incident occurred around 10:20am on the road between the villages of Andriyvka and Shypovate in the Velikoburlutsky community.

Attacks continued throughout the day, such as when a Molniya drone hit a private house at 2:30pm in Slatino, causing damage to the windows, reported the head of the Dergachy Regional State Administration Vyacheslav Zadorenko.

Zadorenko stated that the Russians also hit a car with a Lancet UAV in one of the passable areas of Dergachy at about 5pm on January 27, causing the windows of a grocery store to shatter as a result of the attack.

On the north front of the Kharkiv region, the defence forces neutralised 61 Russian military personnel, as well as eight vehicles of the Russian army, six units of special equipment, 90 drones and an artillery system, reported the 16th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
