Conscript suffers skull fracture due to a beating in a Russian military unit

Head of the Public Monitoring Commission for Dagestan Shamil Khadulaev reported that a 19-year-old conscript from Dagestan had his skull pierced in a military unit in the Voronezh region on or around January 6, 2026.

Khadulaev said Khizbulayev Magomedbek Magomednurovich, (born 7th July 2006), was doing his military duty in Naro-Fominsk before being sent to the Voronezh region, where the conscript suffered a severe beating soon after arriving, resulting in an open head injury and partial memory loss.

According to Khadulaev, the unit’s command was trying to conceal the facts of the beating, claiming instead that he was injured by falling from a tower: “Apparently, it was there that he was severely beaten, resulting in a skull injury, although the official version is ‘he fell from a tower.’”

Khadulaev added that there are grounds to believe that “the facts of what happened were concealed by his commanders.”

Investigations into the incident began around January 12 by the Ministry of National Policy of Dagestan, who were looking to establish all the facts, while the victim was undergoing treatment at a neurosurgical centre in Moscow.

Following no responses from the officials, Magomedbek’s father asked for additional publicity, for further investigations, and for the deputies to not let the case go unresolved.

New information revealed that Magomedbek was serving his military duties in the 13th Guards Tank Regiment (military unit 32010) of the 1st Guards Tank Army, in Naro-Fominsk, but later was sent to the Voronezh region, where an incident occurred on December 6th that had serious health consequences.

However, relatives only found out about what had happened on January 2nd through third parties.

Magomedbek lost part of his skull, one side of his body was paralysed, and he remains bedridden, which is alleged to have been because of a beating, although the official version states that the injury was caused by a fall from a tower.

After independent searches by relatives, it turned out Magomedbek was in Moscow in the Burdenko Hospital, but by this time, Magomedbek had been in a coma for 20 days, while neither the unit, nor the hospital, nor the command had informed the family about what had happened.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the family had still not received any official notification or explanations on February 1, believing that the unit’s command was trying to conceal the facts of the soldier’s beating.

On the morning of February 1, the father appealed to the deputies of the Republic of Dagestan with a request to help in the investigation, so that the case would not be ignored.

Over the next two weeks the stories from the unit’s command kept changing, according to Magomedbek’s father, from a fall from a tower to a fall from equipment, both of which contradict the injuries sustained by the victim.

Despite the fact that Magomedbek regained consciousness and confirmed the fact of the beating to the investigator who arrived from Voronezh, the statements were ignored and the investigator didn’t even question the doctors.

Doctors admitted with the father in private conversations that at the time of the victim’s admission, there were traces of beatings and hematomas on him, but they refused to give official statements, so there hadn’t been any criminal case initiated.

Lawyers have advised the conscript of the victim not to place great homes that the military garrison investigators will initiate a case, and suggested filing complaints with the Ministry of Defence, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Investigative Committee, and the Presidential Administration.
