Around 100,000 residents of Sakhalin were temporarily left without power last night following the activation of protection at CHP-1, and prior to this, a bright flash was witnessed by locals.
Energy specialists told Moscow 24 that the automation was triggered at the plant, causing the CHP to be unloaded to minimal levels, and the electricity supply system was then divided into northern and southern parts, adding that the island’s supply had been partially restored.
The cause of the situation was a breakage in the lightning protection cable on the power line connecting two key substations in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, “Central” and “Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk”, reported Governor Valery Limarenko, adding that the line fell on the wires and activated the protection protocol.
