School explosion in Dnipro left 25 students seeking help in a 24 hour period

An explosion likely occurred in a high school shelter in Dnipro during a demonstration of ammunition, injuring two children, according to the city police.

However, on the afternoon of February 24, the Head of the Emergency Medical Department Yulia told Suspilne that a total of 24 children had sought medical attention within 24 hours of the explosion.

“Most of the patients had ear acubarotrauma,” reported Yulia: “One of them had a closed fracture of the right lower limb. All children were examined and consulted by related specialists, provided with necessary assistance and recommendations, and referred for outpatient treatment,” the specialist noted.

Information about the emergency first spread on social networks yesterday, and police officers immediately responded to the message.

An investigative and operational group and juvenile police officers arrived at the scene where law enforcement officers recorded the circumstances and conducted priority inspection measures – according to initial information, an explosion and smoke occurred during the demonstration of ammunition to students, resulting in two children suffering minor injuries.

According to the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation who are investigating the details of the incident, a pre-trial investigation has been opened under the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Anna, mother of a boy who was taught at the school, told Suspilne yesterday that the explosion happened during classes: “The child thought there was a plane crash, plaster was falling.

“A bunch of children went to the hospital with their parents because their ears hurt – I understand that they were showing some kind of weapon – there was a lesson and something went wrong.

“At that time, there was an alarm, everyone was taking shelter in the basement, the high school students were having a lesson, my son was two walls away, so he heard the explosion, but he was not injured,” Anna said.

According to Suspilne, the Administrator of the school refused to answer journalists’ questions about the incident and denied there was an explosion at the institution.

School Director Inna reported that the incident happened during scheduled practical classes at the “Defence of Ukraine” centre, namely on the topic of “Small Arms and Military Equipment.”

“When the air raid alarm sounded, all the children and teachers went down to the shelter,” Inna said: “During the practical exercises, a demonstration of a grenade dummy was taking place, and during the demonstration, there was a bang and smoke.

“The children were transferred to another location, the doors were opened to eliminate the smoke,” said Inna, adding that one of the students suffered a bruised leg during the evacuation from the scene of the incident and had sought medical attention.

Inna also added that the ammunition dummies were brought to the practical classes by employees of the Shevchenko RTCC who, together with teachers, conduct classes on the subject of “Defence of Ukraine.”
